How Do LED Light Bulbs Compare to CFL For Home Use?

There’s often a debate over which type of light bulb is the best option for homeowners in both the long and short term. Take a look at the difference between LED and CFL light bulbs to determine what will be better for your home.

LED light bulbs Lighting

LED lights are solid energy efficient bulbs. Since it was first developed, LED lighting has advanced, becoming more efficient and affordable. There are many benefits to LED lightbulbs:

• Durable – because these bulbs don’t have a filament, it takes a lot more to damage them. they are more resistant to being jarred or bumped than other bulbs.
• Long-lasting – LED bulbs can last as much as 10 times longer than their CFL counterparts.
• No heat build-up – most incandescent bulbs build heat as they are used, potentially raising the temperature of the room. These bulbs prevent this build-up.
• No mercury – there is no mercury used in LED lights.
• Cost-effective – LED lights may be initially expensive, but the amount you spend is made up in energy savings over time. The cost of LED bulbs has drastically dropped and will continue to drop.
• Higher efficiency – LED lights use about a third of the electricity CFL or incandescent bulbs use.

CFL Lighting

CFL lights offer different advantages than LED lights and are still far better than incandescent light bulbs. There are many things to consider when choosing a CFL bulb, including the shape and size. Some of the advantages of CFL lights include:

• Efficiency – CFLs are not only 4 times more efficient than incandescent light bulbs, they can also last as much as 10 times longer. A 100 watt incandescent light bulb can put forth the same amount of light as a 22 watt CFL bulb.
• Cheaper – the initial cost of a CFL light bulb is won back in the energy savings over time. Over the lifetime of one 18 watt CFL bulb, it will save about 570 kWh compared to a 75 watt incandescent bulb.
• Reduce pollution – using CFL bulbs as opposed to incandescent will significantly reduce the CO2 in the atmosphere. In addition to this, these bulbs can reduce our dependance on power plants, leading to more environmentally friendly means of power.
• Better quality lighting – Instead of the harsh white light older fluorescents gave, CFLs give a warmer and more inviting light. In addition to this, CFL lights don’t hum or flicker during use.
• Versatile – unlike current LED lights, CFLs can be used almost anywhere incandescent lights can. There are also 3-way and dimmer CFL lights that can be used.

Choose the lighting that best suits your needs. While both LED and CFL lights are initially more expensive, they will both save you over time in terms of energy costs and replacement needs.
