Spring Electrical Energy Saving Tips
Spring is in the air. As March comes to a close and April showers lead to May flowers, the temperature will only continue to rise. Now is the time when electric bills start to rise, along with the heat. With a few simple spring cleaning items, you can help reduce your energy bill in the spring, keeping it lower for summer as well.
Turn Electrical appliances Off When Not In Use
Not only should you not leave electrical appliances on when you aren’t using them, they should be unplugged as well. Leaving chargers, lamps, televisions, and other devices plugged in when you aren’t using them will suck energy, even if you have them turned off. In addition to this, unplugging will reduce the fire hazard.
Air Filter
You should be replacing the air filter in your HVAC system at least every three months, potentially more if you have pets in your home. This is important in not only improving the efficiency of your HVAC appliances, but in keeping the air you breath clean. The older and dirtier your filter is, the harder your AC fan will need to work, costing you more.
Electrical Panel Upgrade
If you live in an older home, it may be time for an electrical service upgrade. The amount of power we use on a daily basis is increasing. This additional strain could have an effect on your energy bill, and the functioning of your home electrical appliances. Assess whether you need an electrical panel upgrade to improve savings and safety in your home.
Water Heater
No matter if your water heater is gas or electric, without the proper maintenance it could be costing you more than it should. Hard water is especially damaging to water heaters as it can cause buildup. This buildup will cause the water heater to be inefficient, eventually breaking the heater early. Regular maintenance here will help your water heater last longer.
The Thermostat
Your thermostat is the control center for your HVAC system. During the spring as temperatures are varying, it can be difficult to decide whether you need heat or cool air. To prevent your air conditioner and heater from working overtime, set a wide range for each to turn on during these months. Your home can still stay at a comfortable temperature range without raising your bill.
Make the effort to make your home more energy efficient this spring and into summer. From the small things that can be done to the larger spring cleaning items you can lower your energy bills and protect your home appliances.
